Work from Home Scams
Protecting Yourself from Work from Home Scams
As the Internet becomes more popular, there are increasing opportunities to not only become employed by this medium, but also work from home while doing so. However, not every online opportunity is trustworthy. Trust us - we know. We personally have spent thousands of dollars proving this point. There are tons of scam artists ready to take advantage of the naive and provide you with work from home scams
This is not to say that there aren’t any legitimate work-from-home jobs. You just have to learn how to catch the signs of a scam artist. So before you begin your search for a ‘work from home’ job, let’s explore the ways you can protect yourself from being scammed.
Don’t Give Out Too Much Personal Information
The only information initially that you can safely give out is your first name, last name and email address. If they are asking for more information like date of birth, income, tax file number, credit card etc - then beware.
Conduct a Thorough Background Check
Background checks are particularly important when searching for employment online. If there is no way of contacting someone in person and actually speaking to the real person, then again - beware!
Also, you can take advantage of websites that are dedicated to catching scam artists, such as ScamBusters.org. And you can also check with the government official website for business to see if a company is legitimate.
Use Your Common Sense
It may take a while to develop online common sense, but it will come. I had a call from my mum the other day saying she received an email that claimed you could make $5,000 a week stuffing envelopes from home. Clearly to the majority of us that sounds too good to be true however for someone who is new online this may sound amazing. The same goes for unsolicited emails or spam saying that someone has found a job for you. In time, you’ll automatically delete them and know you’ve probably been placed on a 3rd party mailing list with thousands of others who have been offered the same “job.” Laws in Australia prevent you from receiving 3rd party emails or spam however it does not stop you receiving these email from overseas.

Finding a legitimate work from home job opportunity can be very rewarding, just look at Nicci and I - we are loving working from home. However, to avoid getting caught up in the scams, try to conduct plenty of research and use your common sense. This way, you can avoid the nonsense and avoid getting caught up in any work from home scams.
