Small Business Plan

Friday, February 12th, 2010

A small business plan will give you direction and also summarise your efforts to date. If you are starting out with the business or taking over the business and you need a business loan, or a third party investment, a business plan is essential. There are a few different layouts for a business plan, however you need to create one that is succinct and tailored to your business needs. A typical layout is described below.

Your small business plan should contain the following things:
A title page – this should include basic information about the business as well as a statement about what the business is, location, etc.
Table of contents – listing all parts of the plan and on which page to find them.
Summary – this will be a summary of the small business plan. It will detail briefly everything that you have discussed in the small business plan. This section is not as long as it sounds. Its important to be succinct. This section will be the one most read by others}.
Business description – or small business description as it were. Here is your longest section. It needs to describe your business in detail. Location, population, customer basis, current product/service line, current marketing initiatives, etc. It is important to put as much information about the business you can in this section. Remember, whoever is reading this may not know much about your business and in order for you to get funding, its important for you to put as much useful detail here as possible.
Product or services you deliver – Here you need to talk about the actual purpose of the business and what you provide your customers. You can even have a picture example of your product line so as to detail your description further.
Daily operations – List here what the small business does on a daily basis. What happens in the business each day. What staff do what. Be specific but not too detailed. This section just paints a picture for the reader.
Staff – Here you need to detail how many staff, and how often they work. If you are planning more staff, you can add this to this section as well as the plan section.
Plan – this is one of the most important sections of the small business plan. You will need to discuss current strategies for marketing and advertising and what you are planning for the future. Every business has a future and moves forward throughout the years. You will need to detail in which direction you intend to go here. Be it a new product, an increased service, or a new location. This is ultimately the section that money lenders will be interested in as it will show them how the business is likely to grow and the likely return on their money.
Financials – this section looks at the current financial situation of the company and what the current returns are. Money lenders will be most interested in this section as it lets them know the soundness of their investment. Above all be honest and detail all aspects you know.

When writing a small business plan, its important to make it your own and tailor it to your small business needs. There is not right or wrong, so good luck.
