Success Without Stress

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

What follows is not directly related to marketing, writing, and the other topics and it is easy to dismiss advice like this as simplistic or trivial.

But I found this list to be deceptively profound and effective.

Here are 10 tips for living less stressfully, from “Loving and Leaving the Good Life” by Helen Nearing:

1. Do the best you can, whatever arises.

2. Be at peace with yourself.

3. Find a job you enjoy.

4. Live in simple conditions; get rid of clutter.

5. Contact nature every day; find the earth under your feet.

6. Take physical exercise.

7. Don’t worry; live one day at a time.

8. Share something every day with someone else; help someone else somehow.

9. Take time to wonder at the world and at life; see some humor in life where you can.

10. Be kind.

Leadership - 5 steps to building Trust

Friday, December 12th, 2008

A recent survey concluded that trust has declined at three out of four workplaces over the past two years. Here’s what you can do to help reverse that trend in your organization:

Start from a position of trust. You can approach trust in two ways: 1) trust people on the front end and withdraw it if they prove untrustworthy, or 2) withhold trust until you’re sure it’s warranted. Risk trying No. 1.

Be consistent. Eliminate discrepancies between what you say and what you do. People can’t count on you if you react one way today and another way tomorrow.

Listen with an open mind and respect others’ opinions. Attempt to understand and be open to what you hear. Every opinion is worth hearing, even if you don’t agree with it.

Admit your mistakes. When you’ve erred, others probably know it. Own up to your mistakes and apologize when you’re wrong. Don’t pass the buck or blame others.

Give credit where credit is due. If the team as a whole did something great, say so. There’s plenty of recognition to go around.

Get a success Mindset

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Probably one of the greatest keys to success is mastering Totality. Totality is where you make a radical commitment to becoming successful. You become a ‘total’ person rather than a ‘partial’ person. I usually find people, who aren’t really committed to success, surround themselves with other people who aren’t committed. A lot of people these days want a quick fix to wealth and success. … it rarely works that way. (As quoted by Brendan Nichols, acclaimed international speaker, author)

Over 300 banks turned down Walt Disney before someone said yes to Disneyland. The Beatles were turned down by 10 recording studios before EMI picked them up. Expect a few knocks along the way and be ready to climb over those obstacles.”

Examine your level of commitment. Ask yourself if you need to up the ante. Remember the more
committed you are, the more your team is likely to commit.

One of the reasons that great leaders draw people to them is that they are committed to a goal and an ideal.
