Is Your Small Business Online?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

If you have a small business, or even a large business, it is essential that you are accessible on the Internet. These days if you are not accessible on the internet and you cannot provide your customers with the ability to order from you online, you will be left behind.

If you currently have a small business locally and you want to move your small business online, there are some keys things to think about.

Where do you want to be available to your customers? Obviously advertising of all kinds is essential, but in this advertising you need to direct your customers to you online. In a paper advert, or TV advert, you should clearly label that they can find you on the internet. To be a successful business, you need to have good advertising. This should be set out clearly in your small business plan

The first step is to have a website. This is somewhere where you can list all of your company details, product/service lines, pricing, testimonials, etc. This is your ’shop front’ (but on the internet). The advertising must direct them to this URL (Website address) so that customers who prefer to shop from home can purchase your goods and services from here.

Setting up a website is easy. If you search Google for wensite development and domain hosting you will find a range of online companies that can do this for you. (you can go to template sites such as monster templates and choose your look from many) Once this is created, you can advertise the fact that you have created a new website on online bulletin boards. If you create your site well, you should have a good small business online search result within Google.

You can also sell your goods and services for your business through other areas on the Internet, such as eBay, etsy, or yahoo auctions. You can advertise your goods here and you will get a much wider customer base as these websites are worldwide.

Another medium is yellow pages. Yellow pages has an online service that many people use now. It will have the same advertisement as the paper version, however you can add your website and online details here and customers can click through to your website automatically. As well as yellow pages, there are many community based versions of yellow pages that you can advertise in and again customers can search for you in either the paper or online version and then go to your website. This is good business administration.

One important factor that alot of online small businesses forget is to ensure that you have a way of your customer contacting you directly in as many places as possible on your website. If you customer needs to ask you a question before buying your product and cannot contact you, you have then lost a sale.

Finally you will also need to make sure that you keep your website up to date. You will need to make sure that you have current product/service information and that you respond to customer enquiries regularly. So if you havent done it already, get your small business online!
